Reid Calvert (b. 1992, Austin, Texas) studied at Central Saint Martins in London and now lives and works in Los Angeles, California. His practice is concerned with recreation and how people gather and celebrate, with the aim of exploring what the relations are that emerge through those actions. Calvert’s work examines historical process through commemorations of the past.

This work is a part of a series entitled 'Exit Routes' which depicts portraits of Reids surroundings captured in considered personal spaces and displaced by double exposures of chance encounters.

"In 2020 I created a body of work entitled 'Free Yourself' after moving into my parent's home due to the pandemic. I realized that restricting myself to a 35mm film camera could help me process the ongoings of the world outside the bubble that I found myself in rural Idaho. Through some trial and error, I was able to figure out how to best communicate a visual language to the barren landscapes by using double exposure. I kept finding words in tattered signs throughout my time driving which helped communicate imagery already captured on a previous roll. I found myself in a similar headspace to the pandemic last year and I hope through this series, 'Exit Routes' I will be able to process some feelings through the same technique I used in Idaho...

...I'm finding the joy in not knowing what the outcome of this film will be and it's allowing me to stay focused and present when I take my friend's and family's portraits. I am also discovering that a common thread is stringing my subjects together. I'm realizing that not only myself but my peers are currently going through some state of transition; a liminal space. Through this project I am understanding the power and value of capturing this moment in our time together".
